The event that, without a doubt, marked the beginning of the new century in popular consciousness and is a benchmark for the mass media is 9/11. Asselberghs questions why we should want to embark into the new century with such a destructive and spectacular image and proposes to opt for a more redemptive and emancipatory moment with little spectacle value but more political potential: 15 February 2003, the day the world protested against the US government's decision to invade Iraq. At the crossroads between poetry and politics, Asselberghs' new work urges us to consider the multiple implications of media images in our society as well as to imagine what the possibilities might be for an alternative media landscape.

Oops wrong planet

video, b/w, BE, 08'00", 2009

animation: Tom Kluyskens
music: Scanner

'Oops wrong planet' shows an attractive, rolling landscape from a different planet. An attempt is made to establish contact. Long-distance communication is possible, albeit with some interference on the line. Clear contact appears impossible, though. The static appears like a veil that clouds the picture. There's the temptation to look behind the picture, so as to bypass the interference and get to a clear picture. The soundtrack of Scanner reinforces the static between distance and vicinity even further. 'Oops wrong planet' permanently switches between what seems possible and impossible in terms of contact. It's a grope in the dark, in search of the place where real contact can be possible, beyond time and space.

Blue Meridian, the documentary project by Sofie Benoot produced by Auguste Orts, won the first edition of the FIDLab during FID Marseille (FR) on July 10. A brand new international platform supporting the co-production of documentary and fiction film projects at every stage of development, the FIDLab 2009 selected 13 projects among 260 applications sent in response to an international call for proposals. The jury composed of Virginie Devesa in charge of international sales at U Media, Dicky Parlevliet, responsible for the French selection at the International Film Festival of Rotterdam and member of the Hubert Bals Fund committee as well as Simon Field, producer, rewarded Blue Meridian first prize, assigned by Panavision & Air France. Blue Meridian is a journey along the Mississippi, a river that crosses the Deep South as well as the imagination of Northern America. A cinematographic encounter with a mythical place and its people today.
