Je t'embrasse, Gilbert

Drawing on an archive of letters, Heremans traces the correspondence of an East African student living in the Soviet Union in the 1970s. Through found footage and narration, the film follows the traces of an individual life within a larger political history, attending in particular to what remains hidden between the silences of the historical record.
Heremans work explores intertwined histories shaped by diasporic experience, African socialist movements in the post-independence period and the political legacies of the Cold War.
